At 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23, downtown Winder will have two Halloweens going at once. At Jug Tavern Park, the City's Spooktacular will be an hour into "Winder's Pirate Cove," where young buccaneers search for treasure and collect candy. Over on Porter Street, the doors of the old Barrow County Jail will open for Night of Horror 2, a haunted attraction where movie villains step off the screen and into a live scare.
For three hours the two run side by side. Spooktacular ends at 9 p.m. and the jail stays open until 10. Most of the October calendar around Winder is also built for after dark, from a new-moon hike at Fort Yargo to a bat walk at dusk. Oct. 23 is the night all of it lands in downtown at once.
Here's how the evening of Oct. 23 lines up, based on the City's listing and the Barrow News-Journal's report on the haunted jail:
Spooktacular is a big event. The City's Eventeny listing expects 4,000 to 6,000 people this year. Last year, the City said organizers had more than 56,000 pieces of candy ready for trick-or-treaters. That much candy only goes out because a lot of people hand it out. The City is taking trick-or-treat booth applications through Oct. 14, and only businesses, nonprofits, clubs and other recognized organizations can apply. Private individuals and informal groups can't. If your church group, scout troop or shop wants a booth on the route, you have about nine days left from today.
The City hasn't posted a list of participating merchants yet, and it hasn't published a road-closure notice. Check the City of Winder festivals and events page closer to the 23rd.
Night of Horror 2 is the half of the evening built for people who want an actual scare. The Barrow News-Journal describes it as recognizable horror characters, villains and unexpected surprises, set inside the old county jail. The money it raises goes to the Barrow Fire Foundation and the Barrow County Sheriff's Office Employee Fund.
Spooktacular is a one-night event. The Barrow News-Journal's Sep. 7, 2026 announcement puts the jail on a four-night schedule spread across two weekends:
Each night runs 6 to 10 p.m. Because of that schedule, a family doesn't have to cram both events into one Friday. Younger kids can do the Pirate Cove on the 23rd, and the older crowd can save the jail for the following Thursday or Friday.
The published announcement doesn't give a ticket price, a way to buy tickets or an age recommendation. The event photo in that announcement is credited to the Barrow County Sheriff's Office, so its channels are a sensible place to watch for those details before you go.
The City's standard downtown event parking map lists free lots and street parking within walking distance of Jug Tavern Park. Here's that list from the City's July 2026 events bulletin:
Porter Street shows up on that list and is also the haunted jail's address, so on Oct. 23 both events will be using the same street. The City asks guests to arrive early so they have time to park and walk to the event. With the jail opening at 6, getting there close to Spooktacular's 5 p.m. start makes even more sense. If you're headed for the jail, a lot on the east side of Athens Street or behind City Hall on Midland Avenue leaves Porter Street for the people walking in.
The jail is not the only reason to be out after dark this month. The library events below come from the Barrow News-Journal's October roundup, dated Sep. 30, 2026. Fort Yargo State Park, 210 S. Broad St., has a fall program lineup that mostly runs in the evening, and each program charges a fee on top of the park parking fee.
| Date | Event | Where | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fri., Oct. 9 | Family minigolf | Fort Yargo State Park | 6–7 p.m. | $5 + parking |
| Sat., Oct. 10 | New Moon Stargazing Hike | Fort Yargo State Park | 9–10 p.m. | $10 + parking |
| Fri., Oct. 16 | Bat Chat and Stroll | Fort Yargo State Park | 7–9 p.m. | $10 + parking |
| Tue., Oct. 20 | "Knot Skeleton" teen Halloween craft | Winder Public Library, 189 Bellview St. | 5–6 p.m. | Not listed |
| Thu., Oct. 22 | Spooktacular featuring the Sanderson Sisters, all ages | Statham Public Library, 1928 Railroad St. | 5–6 p.m. | Not listed |
The stargazing hike lands on a new-moon Saturday at 9 p.m., and the bat walk starts at 7 on a mid-October Friday. Both are timed to the dark. For anyone who'd rather spend the season in the woods than in a haunted jail, they fit the mood just as well. Registration and details are on the Georgia State Parks event listing for Fort Yargo.
The Statham event sits on the Thursday before Spooktacular and is over by 6 p.m. Families with small kids can treat it as a warm-up the night before downtown fills up.
Oct. 24 is the busiest daytime slot of the month, with three things on one Saturday:
Art in the Park ends at 4, right when the car show starts. Kids who missed Friday's candy, or just want more, get a second round of trick-or-treating on West Athens Street before dinner.
That weekend is also the last of Washington Farms' extended fall weekends, Oct. 23 through 25. The farm is at 5691 Hog Mountain Road in Bogart, a short drive east of Winder. Extended-weekend admission is $21.95 plus tax and fees for everyone age 2 and up, or $31.95 with the Mega Slide, and tickets are sold online only. The pumpkin patch has no admission fee, but pumpkins are priced separately. The fall season runs through Nov. 8, so you can also go after Halloween.
The second weekend at the old jail brings the season back downtown. Night of Horror 2 is open Thursday, Oct. 29, and Friday, Oct. 30, from 6 to 10 p.m. Halloween falls on a Saturday this year. That morning, Winder Public Library on Bellview Street hosts "BINGO for All: Halloween Edition" starting at 10 a.m. That leaves the evening open for trick-or-treating on your own street.
"Kick off the holiday season with the Winder Tree Lighting at Jug Tavern Park!"
That's how the City describes the next downtown evening on its calendar, Friday, Nov. 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. The tree lights up at 6:30, followed by photos with Santa, free crafts and s'mores by the fire pits. The 77th Annual Winder Christmas Parade follows on Dec. 12, starting at 2:30 p.m., with Santa's After Party at Jug Tavern Park after the parade.
Whether you'll be handing out candy from your own porch this year or walking the kids to the Pirate Cove on Oct. 23, it helps to know how your street connects to downtown Winder. The same goes for what your home is worth. The Merritt Realty Group knows these streets well and would be glad to give you a clear, no-pressure answer. Get Your Free Home Valuation.
